High Adventure Training

Purpose
For the Middle Tennessee Council to develop program areas which will assist units in the retention of youth. This is accomplished by giving young people challenging activities that are age appropriate and provide the resources to accomplish a safe and effective program.

  • Youth white water canoeing/kayaking

EQUIPMENT / CERTIFICATION

High Adventure equipment is available for rent from the Scout Service Center. Once certified, a leader can check out the specified equipment for the program for which they were trained, but they must attend the trip.

At least two adult Scout leaders from each group must be trained and certified to use the equipment.

Rappelling Training

Rappelling and rock climbing are the most rapidly growing outdoor sports. Young people are now engaging in them with various degrees of knowledge and ability.

We can teach you the basic skills of ropes and safety and prepare you for an outdoor adventure with your Scouts.

Rappelling/rock climbing course certification is valid for two years. Completion of one session (two and a half days) will certify or re-certify an individual for two years.

September 5-7, 2008

October 24-26, 2008

If weather impacts the scheduled weekend, participatants will be notified and the course will be rescheduled.

Each session begins at 7:00 PM on Friday at Boxwell Scout Reservation and concludes at 4:00 PM on Sunday at Stone Door (Grundy County, TN )

Each participant is responsible for their own food and camping equipment for the weekend. Bring leather gloves and current Scout medical form.

1 month prior to the class, each registered participant will be mailed further details.

Cost: $ 10.00 ( for materials and equipment)
(non-refundable/non-transferable)

Please note that if you do not attend the class you are registered for, you will lose your class registration and forfeit your registration fee.

Whitewater Training

Completion of this training certifies adult leaders to conduct challenging, safe white water canoeing trips for their Scouts.

With this certification also comes the opportunity to rent equipment on a first- come first-served basis from the council to conduct your activity.

You must choose either canoeing OR kayaking at registration and you must complete all sessions to receive certification.

White Water Training Dates

Session I : May 16-18, 2008, Boxwell Scout Reservation

Session II : May 30 - June 1, 2008, Hiwassee River

Cost: $50.00 (non-refundable)

Youth Whitewater Training

The Middle Tennessee Council, BSA is hosting its second annual Youth Whitewater Paddling School, which will be instructed by TSRA trained instructors.

The instructors for this school have over 300 years of collective paddling experience.

Kayaking Prerequisites:

  1. 12 years or older
  2. 1st Class Scout (if applicable)
  3. Canoeing Merit Badge (if applicable)
  4. BSA Swimmer
  5. Signed Permission Slip
  6. Class II or III Medical Form

Canoeing Prerequisites

  1. 12 years or older
  2. 1st Class Scout (if applicable)
  3. BSA Swimmer
  4. Signed Permission Slip
  5. Class II or III Medical Form

Note: Boats, PFDs, paddles, spray skirts and helmets will be provided.
