Long Rifle (District Award of Merit)
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Long Rifle Award is a Council Award presented by Districts in the same manner that the Silver Beaver is a National Award presented by Council.
The award is made available to Scouters who render service of an outstanding nature in the District, not just unit level service.
The award is made available annually on the basis of 1 for each 20 units or fraction thereof. The District need not present all the awards to which it is entitled each year.
It is not appropriate to nominate a Scouter who has already received this award.
Any registered adult Scouter may nominate individuals for the award.
If nominee is selected, nominator must provide pertinent information, i.e. family, employer, etc.
REQUIREMENTS
1. A nominee must have rendered noteworthy service in a registered or nonregistered (such as FOS or other chairman) capacity to the Boy Scouts of America. NOTE: The nature and value of “noteworthy service” may consist of a single plan or decisions that contributed vitally to the lives of large numbers of youth or it may have been given to a small group over an extended period of time.
2. The nominee should have received proper training for his position.
3. Consideration must be given to the nominee’s Scouting position and the corresponding opportunity to render outstanding service beyond the expectations of that Scouting position.
4. The nominee’s attitude toward and cooperation with the District and/or Council is to be taken into consideration.
PROCEDURE
Annually, the District Chairman will appoint a Long Rifle Award Chairman who will select and convene a temporary committee of past Long Rifle recipients who will consider all candidates and make recommendations of those to receive the award to the District Chairman. The District Chairman will approve and forward these nominations to the Council through the Scout Executive.
