How to become a Merit Badge Counselor

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Merit Badge Counselor in the Middle Tennessee Council.  As a Merit Badge Counselor, you help fulfill an important role in the Aims of Scouting, and provide new avenues of learning and advancement for Scouts BSA.  Serving your Council as a Merit Badge Counselor can be a very rewarding and fun experience, and you may even have the opportunity to influence the Scout to pursue that interest as a career or hobby. Before you begin in your role as a Merit Badge Counselor, you will need to complete these items first.

1. Must be a registered adult in the Middle Tennessee Council

(Even if you are applying for the first time as a registered as a leader in a unit to become a merit badge counselor requires a separate or new application). The "Signature of unit committee chairman" or "Signature of chartered organization head or representative" are NOT required....however all other signatures and information is, including your Social Security Number. If you fail to compete the application it WILL NOT be processed, you CANNOT become a Merit Badge Counselor unless the 2 application documents and 1 training document are complete, accurate and a background check is performed. This is a District level position, Unit Signatures are NOT required.

2. A copy or proof of your current Youth Protection Training certificate.

To take Youth Protection training go to  and create an account. You’ll receive an email notification with your account information, including a member ID/reference number.


Volunteers MUST NOT work with boys/girls in any capacity WITHOUT current/valid Youth Protection Training.

3. Merit Badge Counselor Information form 34405.

All Merit Badge Counselors must be:

  • Qualified: "They must be men and women of good character, age 18 or older, and recognized as having the skills and education in the subjects for which they are to serve as merit badge counselors, as well as the ability to work with youth.

  • Registered: "as a merit badge counselor"

  • Approved: "for each specific merit badge."

  • Trained: "in the aims of Scouting and in advancement procedures."

 Click your dashboard—Training Center---Boy Scouting and Varsity—(Scouting U) click Merit badge Counselor Training—add Plan—start the Training.

MBC Renewal Instructions:

Please note that your MBC registration will expire at the end of each year. After December 31, registration will expire and the following steps must be taken:

  1. Have current Youth Protection Training. Youth Protection can be updated at If your Youth Protection is not currently please complete and return certificate with your application.  This training is good for 2 years.

  2. Send in an updated Merit Badge Counselor application, indicating which badges you would like to add/drop. If neither, please write “same.”
