U.S. Ambassador William F. “Bill” Hagerty, IV, a native Tennessean, earned both Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degrees from Vanderbilt University. He began his professional career at Boston Consulting Group, including a three-year assignment to Tokyo, Japan. Hagerty served as an economic advisor and White House Fellow under President George H. W. Bush, and then began a career in private equity. He has served on the Boards of numerous privately-held and public companies. From 2011 to 2014, Hagerty served in the cabinet of Governor Bill Haslam as commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, where he helped secure investments by leading companies including Nissan, Beretta, Hankook Tire, Bridgestone and Calsonic Kansei in the Middle Tennessee Council area as well as numerous others across the State. He was also responsible for the Tennessee Film, Entertainment and Music Commission that helped launch the TV series, Nashville. President Trump appointed Hagerty as the 30th U.S. Ambassador to Japan and he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate and sworn in July of 2017. Hagerty served in this role until July 2019.
Hagerty co-founded and led the Nashville Major League Soccer (MLS) Steering Committee, a coalition seeking to bring an MLS franchise to Nashville. That effort was successful as Nashville was named the first of two new MLS expansion markets in December 2017.
An Eagle Scout from Gallatin, Tennessee, Bill Hagerty has been a dedicated Scouting volunteer. He has served in multiple positions on the National Capital Area Council, Far East Council and Middle Tennessee Council Executive Boards, as well as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 31 at St. George‘s Episcopal Church in Nashville. Hagerty was awarded the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award in 2017 and the National Outstanding Eagle Service Award in 2016.
