Youth Protection Training

Over the past two years, BSA has worked with experts in the field of child abuse to develop new training and resources that will further strengthen our ability to protect youth.

The new version of YPT contains valuable segments on bullying and digital privacy, inaddtion to addressing tough topic like youth-on-youth incidents.

Cub Scout Leader Specific Training

Cub Scout Leader Training provides the specialized knowledge a new leader needs to assume a leadership role.

BALOO Training

Welcome to BALOO training! It is the Cub Scout leader training required for any Cub Scout den or pack outdoor event, including pack camping overnighters and Webelos den overnighters. BALOO training is comprised of two components—an online component and a practical, hands-on component. Both components must be completed to qualify as a “TRAINED” Cub Scout outdoor leader. The online component must be completed prior to the practical component. The online training contains introductory and basic information that will be built upon during the practical training.

BB and Archery

This is the certification class for Range Officers to prepare them to conduct certified and safe Shooting Sports activities in Council Day Camps and other Council Cub Events.

Adult White Water Training

This course is one component of the Council’s Whitewater Program that was established in 1994 to introduce whitewater canoeing and kayaking to Scouting. The program was designed to provide training programs for adult leaders and to offer whitewater equipment for rental to troops whose leaders had been through the training program. Since 1994 hundreds of adult leaders have attended the program.

OLS Training

Working as patrols, this hands-on course provides adult leaders the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors. Upon completion, leaders should feel comfortable teaching Scouts the basic skills required to obtain the First Class rank.

Unit Sailing Adventure

Learn the skills needed to conduct a weekend sailing activity at Boxwell’s Pfeffer Boat Harbor using the American 14.6 and Aqua Finn Sailboats. There will be 3 hours of classroom time and 8 ½ hours of hands on Sailboat training and sailing.

Wilderness First Aid Training

Latimer Reservation is proud to offer to Scouts (age 14 ) and adults the opportunity to complete the Wilderness First Aid Training. This training is required of each unit participating in any of the national high adventure programs of the BSA. This training will be conducted by Bob, Janet and Katie Forde, certified instructors.

Powder Horn

Powder Horn is an Outdoor/High Adventure resource management course designed to motivate and prepare adult and youth leaders to provide their unit with a safe and correct Outdoor/High Adventure activities.

Trainers Edge

Trainers Edge is a Train the Trainer program. It is designed to develop our Scout Training Volunteers so they can provide outstanding training and development opportunities to our Scouts and Scout Leaders. The Trainers Edge will provide practical knowledge on how to facilitate learning in a classroom setting, or one on one. The workshop will provide practical knowledge and guided coaching to polish the skills you have and to equip you with new skills and tools.

University of Scouting

The University of Scouting (UoS) is Middle Tennessee Council’s premier one-day core and supplemental training opportunity. UoS goes beyond Leader Specific and even Advanced Training to prepare Scout Leaders with the knowledge and skills on specific topics that help them excel in their efforts to deliver the promise of Scouting. In addition, there are several training opportunities for youth as well! The UoS goal is to provide information that is practical, and immediately useful on topics that are not readily available at the local unit level.

Wood Badge

Wood Badge is the premier adult leadership training program for the Boy Scouts of America. This program is open to all registered adult Cub Scout, Scouts BSA, Venturing, District and Council leaders who have completed the basic training requirements (Youth Protection, Fast Start, This is Scouting and Position Specific Training). Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters must also complete Introduction to Outdoor leadership Skills.

College of Commissioner Science

The College of Commissioner Science is an advanced training program where our council's commissioner staff offers a rich variety of courses designed to help you further develop leadership, communications, management, and Commissioner skills in order to improve your ability to serve youth.

Chainsaw safety Certification

Operating a chain saw is inherently hazardous. Proper maintenance, personal protective equipment, and correct technique are critical components of safe chain saw operation. Potential injuries can be minimized by using proper personal protective equipment and safe operating procedures. The Boy Scouts of America properties rely on chain saws to help clear trails, remove deadfalls, clear timber, and stockpile wood for campfires and heating buildings. To allow for this use, specific guidelines for safety have been adapted for use at all BSA activities we have creating this training at Boxwell Reservation

Leave No Trace Trainer Course

The Leave No Trace educational program has become the ethical baseline for modern outdoor Scouting in our BSA publications, advancement, and training events. This course will provide a Scouting introduction to the science of recreation ecology.

We will offer a variety of Shooting Shoots Training including but not limited to Basic Range Safety Officer Training, Basic Shotgun, Basic Rifle, Basic Muzzleloading

Kodiak

Kodiak is designed to be an adventure that pushes the boundaries of every participant, one that will encourage you to try new things that may be out of your comfort zone. Each participant will be challenged with new activities and skills such as bike riding, realistic first aid, sailing, and outdoor cooking. Participants will be split into clans of bears to signify the challenge with the intent of preparing for the future with servant leadership in mind.

Den Chief Training

As a Scouts BSA, you have the unique opportunity to become a Den Chief, a Scouts BSA who assists a Cub Scout Den leader or Webelos Scout Den leader at Den meetings, Pack meetings, and other events. The Den Chief is a ready source of games, songs, skits, and skills, and he/she encourages the other boys/girls in their advancement.

NYLT

NYLT is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide youth members of the Boy Scouts of America with leadership skills and experiences that they can use in their home unit and in other situations demanding quality leadership. This training integrates the best of modern leadership theory with Scouting through activities, presentations, challenges, while engaged in a unified approach to leadership. Using a wide-range of activities events, games, and adventure, participants put into action the leadership skills they are learning.

Rappelling Training

Rappelling and rock climbing are the most rapidly growing outdoor sports. Young people are now engaging in them with various degrees of knowledge and ability. We can teach you the basic skills of ropes and safety and prepare you for an outdoor adventure with your Scouts. Rappelling/rock climbing course training is valid for two years. Completion of one session (two and a half days) will train or re-train an individual for two years.

Youth White Water Training

The Middle Tennessee Council was the first and is still one of the few Councils to offer this training. Whitewater Canoeing and Kayaking is a great high adventure activity for your Scout. This course is taught for both kayaks and canoes and at all skill levels - Beginner, Novice, Intermediate and Advanced. The training can be taken as a Troop or Crew activity or by individual Scouts.
